It almost seemed as though every elderly female stage and film star–from Ethel Merman to Dorothy Lamour to Ginger Rogers–tried their hand at portraying Thornton Wilder’s famous matchmaker, Dolly Levi, following the musical’s smash 1964 opening, and yet the role will always belong to Carol Channing. When Pearl Bailey assumed the role on Broadway, however, she created yet another critical sensatio…

After initially rejecting the role as too sentimental, Ginger Rogers found the title character of Kitty Foyle to be an Oscar winner and a career breakthrough. Meet a dewy-eyed ingenue, a gee-whiz tenor, stuck-up stars, hard-up producers, brassy blondes and shady ladies from the 80′s. They’re all denizens of 42nd Street, belting out ageless Harry Warren/Al Dubin songs and tapping out Busby Berkeley’s's sensational Depression-lifting production numbers. The put-on-a-show plot spins merrily, full of snappy banter and new faces Ruby Keeler (her movie debut), Dick Powell and Ginger Rogers. The show-stopping numbers ( Shuffle Off To Buffalo You’re Getting To Be A Habit With Me and the title tune) still dazzle. Looking and sounding its best in years via this new digital transfer from the restored original camera negative and optical audio tracks, 42nd Street shows good times never go out of style.

 Billy Wilder

Billy Wilder

$50

Always daring Hollywood censors’ limits on content, Billy Wilder directed greats such as Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon, Ginger Rogers, Marlene Dietrich, Kirk Douglas, Audrey Hepburn, and Gary Cooper. Billy Wilder. Interviews follows the filmmaking career of one of Hollywood’s most honored and successful writer-directors and spans over fifty years.Wilder, born in 1906, fled from Nazi Germany and established himself in America. Starting with a celebrated 1944 Life magazine profile, the book traces his progress from his Oscar-winning hey-day of the 1940s to the 1990s, in which he is still witty, caustic, and defiant.Often playful and sometimes outrageous, but just as often very serious, Wilder details his rise as a Berlin cub reporter to a fledgling screenwriter in Hollywood’s Golden Age. He tells the stories behind his brilliant direction of such classics as Double Indemnity (1944), The Lost Weekend (1945), Sunset Boulevard (1950), Stalag 17 (1953), Sabrina (1954), The Seven-Year Itch (1955), Some Like It Hot (1959), and The Apartment (1960), among others.A dazzling raconteur, Wilder gives the scoop on the royalty of cinema, from the maddening magic of Monroe to the uncanny empathy of frequent alter ego Lemmon. Though his natural tendency is to spin marvelous anecdotes on the subject of show business, Wilder also delivers penetrating and instructive observations on his craft. On screen, his special blend of cynicism and romanticism was always expressed in a style that avoided showiness.Billy Wilder: Interviews includes in-depth profiles, spirited Q&A’s, and on-the-set glimpses of the director at work. Taken together, the interviews form an unofficial memoir of a sophisticatedartist once described by a colleague as the most unusual and amusing man in Hollywood.

 Designing the Seaside

Designing the Seaside

$60

In Alfred Hitchcock s To Catch a Thief, a seaside resort was the setting for thievery and intrigue. Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers tap-danced their way to fame at a Brighton resort in The Gay Divorcee, The seaside resort has always held a special fascination, a place of containment and leisure that has a unique form in the physical landscape: towering hotels, shop-lined boardwalks, and sprawling beaches. Fred Gray delves into the history of seaside architecture here in Designing the Seaside, writing the rich and international story of the seaside resort s diverse structures from the eighteenth century through today. Gray is interested not only in the physical structures but also the cultural mores they represent the yearly holiday, and our attitudes about leisure. The coastal landscape has been transformed by this geography of relaxation, and Gray considers the physical and cultural shifts that occurred when shops, boardwalks, and hotels buried sand dunes and marshes beneath their beams. He examines the design processes that went into creating the diverse buildings and spaces within a seaside resort, giving full attention to ephemeral structures such as pavilions and summer gift shops as well as the trademark hotel buildings, fairgrounds, and open spaces. Designing the Seaside also reveals how events such as beauty pageants made seaside resorts into sites of debate over conflicted issues of sexuality and morality. Drawing on a diverse array of historical material photographs, guidebooks, postcards, and posters Fred Gray offers a fascinating account of the cultural and social symbolism of the seaside resort and its rolein the modern landscape.

 George Gallup in Hollywood

George Gallup in Hollywood

$5.07

George Gallup in Hollywood is a fascinating look at the film industry’s use of opinion polling in the 1930s and ’40s. George Gallup’s polling techniques first achieved fame when he accurately predicted that Franklin D. Roosevelt would be reelected president in 1936. Gallup had devised an extremely effective sampling method that took households from all income brackets into account, and Hollywood studio executives quickly pounced on the value of Gallup’s research. Soon he was gauging reactions to stars and scripts for RKO Pictures, David O. Selznick, and Walt Disney and taking the public’s temperature on Orson Welles and Desi Arnaz, couples such as Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, and films like Gone with the Wind, Dumbo, and Fantasia. Through interviews and extensive research, Susan Ohmer traces Gallup’s groundbreaking intellectual and methodological developments, examining his comprehensive approach to market research from his early education in the advertising industry to his later work in Hollywood. The results of his opinion polls offer a fascinating glimpse at the class and gender differences of the time as well as popular sentiment toward social and political issues.

It’s the Hollywood of the future, where moviemaking’s been computerized and live-action films are a thing of the past. Tom offers to make her dream a reality: he’ll digitize her face onto any actress’s she likes – Ann Miller, Ruby Keeler, even Ginger Rogers. Screen Couple Chemistry: The Power of 2

Screen Couple Chemistry: The Power of 2

$40.22

Astaire and Rogers, Tracy and Hepburn. Just the mention of their names evokes the powerful chemistry between these screen couples, which utterly transcended the often formulaic films in which they appeared together. Indeed, watching the synergistic flow of energy between charismatic screen partners is one of the great pleasures of cinema and television, as well as an important vehicle for thinking through issues of intimacy and gender relations. In this book, Martha P. Nochimson engages in a groundbreaking study of screen couple chemistry. She begins by classifying various types of couples to define what sets the synergistic couple apart from other onscreen pairings. Then she moves into extended discussions of four enduring screen couples–Maureen O’Sullivan/Johnny Weissmuller, Myrna Loy/William Powell, Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers, and Katharine Hepburn/Spencer Tracy. Using theories of neuroscience, she demonstrates that their onscreen chemistry is a very real phenomenon, powerful enough to subvert conventional formulations of male/female relations. Material she has uncovered in the infamous Production Code Administration files illuminates the historical context of her contentions. Finally, Nochimson traces the screen couple to its present-day incarnation in such pairs as Woody Allen/Diane Keaton, Scully/Mulder of The X-Files, and Cliff/Claire Huxtable of The Cosby Show.

 The Half-Mammals of Dixie: Stories

The Half-Mammals of Dixie: Stories

$22.95

George Singleton, who’s had many stories published in the best literary journals, has recently burst into the big time with appearances in Playboy, Zoetrope, The Atlantic Monthly, Harper’s Magazine and Book. The stories in his new collection are wild and wooly – or maybe we should say wild and half-wooly. In any case, they’re definitely not for the creationist crowd or for the laughter impaired. For example: – A self-described primitive artist, getting rich off religious canvases, is mistaken for a faith healer. – A lovelorn dad woos his third grader’s teacher with very special show-and-tells, including long lost love letters to Shakespeare from Anne Hathaway, to Fred Astaire from Ginger Rogers, and to Henry VIII from all of his wives. – A boy’s reputation is ruined forever when he accepts the starring role in a documentary on diagnosing head lice. Off-the-wall. But also utterly believable and written with tremendous affection for the people and their place-a place called Forty-Five, part of the contemporary South that’s far removed from big city Atlanta or proper Charleston and, in fact, much like Singleton’s own hometown of Dacusville, South Carolina. As he says of his characters, They’re regular people just trying to get by. Most of them aren’t jaded by everyday life, though perhaps they should have been long ago. There are some with physical and mental limitations, but I hope all of them have heart. They do indeed, just like their stories.

 Top Hat

Top Hat

$19.97

Perhaps the best remembered of the 10 Astaire/Rogers musicals, Top Hat has it all: Art Deco elegance, a wonderfully addled storyline, loopy support from skilled farceurs and the incomparable chemistry of the two leads cheek-to-cheeking to Irving Berlin’s finest film score. It’s a wake-up call for romance when Fred’s exuberant No Strings dance in his hotel suite disturbs the sleeping beauty (Ginger) in the room below. They meet cute, Fred decides he’d like a few strings (preferably a tied knot) after all and love beckons — until Ginger mistakenly gets the idea that Fred is a married playboy. But mistakes can be wonderfully, wackily resolved. Among the highlights: Fred mows down the chorus line in his signature Top Hat, White Tie and Tails, the shimmeringly dreamy Isn’t It a Lovely Day (to Be Caught in the Rain)? and the rhapsodically tender Cheek to Cheek. Nominated for 4 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Top Hat is top-drawer entertainment magic.
