Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (Walt Disney’s Masterpiece) [VHS] $0.01 One of the brightest nuggets from Disney’s golden age, this 1937 film is almost dizzying in its meticulous construction of an enchanted world, with scores of major and minor characters (including fauna and fowl), each with a distinct identity. When you watch Snow White’s intricate, graceful movements of fingers, arms, and head all in one shot, it is not the technical brilliance of Disney’s artists… |

Star Wars Trilogy (Special Edition) [VHS] $8.20 The Star Wars trilogy had the rare distinction of becoming more than just a series of movies, but a cultural phenomenon, a life-defining event for its generation. On its surface, George Lucas’s original 1977 film is a rollicking and humorous space fantasy that owes debts to more influences than one can count on two hands, but filmgoers became entranced by its basic struggle of good vs. evil “a lon… |

Masters of Horror-Imprint $14.98 An American journalist in search of the love he once left behind travels to a mysterious Japanese island where the past is best left forgotten in the one installment of {@Showtime’s Masters of Horror series that was too controversial for American television. It was long ago that Christopher (Billy Drago) met the mysterious prostitute who captured his heart, but their grim fate was forever sealed when he left the island with only a promise to return one day in the future. Unlike many of the insincere souls who promise to spirit the prostitutes away from the dark and infernal island, Christopher actually made good on his word. However, life is cheap on this bewitched island where the local brothel is the sole refuge for weary souls, and though he ultimately proved to be a rare exception to the rule, Christopher has taken far too long to fulfill his promise. Now, as he shares his woeful tale with a horribly scarred whore (Youki Kudoh) whose knowledge of his long lost love’s true fate may prove more of a curse than a blessing, Christopher is about to discover that there are times when death can be the kindest release of all. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie GuideSpecial Features:An all-new interview with Takashi MiikeInterviews with actors and collaborators on previous worksSystem Requirements:Running Time: 63 minsFormat: DVD MOVIE |

Namban $75 Namban is one of the first known Eastern terms for Westernization, and it describes a century of Japanese trade with Europe in the 1500s and 1600s, trade that influenced Japanese society and art a great deal until the nation, in response, sealed its borders. Japanese art showing Namban influence is well known; here the antiquarian and historian Rodrigo Rivero Lake uses the term to identify Japanese influence in not just Western art of the same era, but New World, Mexican art. Lake sketches the shared history of Asia and Viceregal Mexico (then a European colony), which face one another across the Pacific. He follows the travels of the Galesns of Manila and Nao of China from Asia to Acapulco, and the Japanese schools of painting and artistic techniques introduced in the process. Every story takes readers deeper into the complex genealogies of Mexican Namban, to its roots, and eventually to evaluations of its technical, stylistic and iconographic characteristics. The Namban art of Mexico, while culturally revealing and relevant, is rare, and has long been little known: Rodrigo Rivero Lake shares his comprehensive expertise with generosity and style. |

State of Mind $17.93 A State Of Mind follows two North Korean schoolgirls and their families in the lead up to the Mass Games — the biggest and most elaborate human performance on earth — and in the process reveals more of North Korea than ever before.Following on from the 2002 award winning documentary The Game of Their Lives,VeryMuchSo productions was granted permission from the North Korean film authorities to make a second documentary: an observational film following two young gymnasts, 13 year old Pak Hyon Sun and 11 year old Kim Song Yun, and their families for over eight months in the lead up to the Mass Games — involving a cast of thousands in a choreographed socialist realism spectacular — the biggest and most elaborate human performance on earth.A State Of Mind provides a rare glimpse into what is one of the world’s least known societies. North Korea is sealed off from outside influences. It borders China and Russia to the north, and to the south there is a 4km wide impenetrable border with South Korea. The country follows its own communist ideals, a strict philosophy known as the Juche Idea wrapped around the worship of the Kim dynasty — Kim Il Sung, their Eternal President who died in 1994 but remains Head of State, and his son and successor, Kim Jong Il, known as the General. The crew began filming in February 2003 with unique access to the two families’ day to day life from home, at work in the city and countryside — a remarkable insight into a part of North Korean society never before allowed. As their Korean minder explained you have to understand, no one has ever been allowed to see, let alone film, what you are witnessing .Western eyes, for the very first time, have a unique insight into North Korean society, its people, its way of life, and its total devotion to their leader and ruler, Kim Jong Il. |

Topsoil Road $40.95 Robert Morgan’s newest collection of poetry is a treasury of snapshots in time, celebrating the past and present in Morgan’s native region of western North Carolina and the Green River Valley. Topsoil Road features two parts, the first flowing smoothly from Cherokee history to the arrival of the poet’s Welsh forebears; the second eloquently depicting the intricacies of nature and how they are subjected to the world of man.Morgan offers detailed memories of such people and places as the thrush doctor who could heal sickness by blowing into the feverish mouth of a patient, and the Blue Hole — the deepest, darkest pool to be found in the Green River — where hundreds of eels would appear once every year.Whether describing the Cherokee chief Attakullakulla in London or the way a zebra spider glides across the sky, Morgan casts each poem with elegance and a rare sense of wonder, turning minute observations of the commonplace into portraits of delicate and amazing beauty. Throughout the collection, his voice and vision remain strong as he employs an impressive range of poetic forms, including pantoums, sonnets, couplets, and blank verse. Morgan’s own words may best distill the impression Topsoil Road leaves: each cell / a hex perfect as a snowflake, / a sealed relic of sun and time / and roots of many acres fixed in crystal-tight arrays, in rows / and lattices of sweeter latin / from scattered prose of meadow, woods . |
