How do I get surround sound on my tv networks ?

I am thinking of buying a surround sound system.. I can plug it directly in to my HDMI port in my TV and it will work when watching a DVD but what if I want surround sound on my television networks ?
My Tv does not have an optical audio output so that eliminates that option..

Any thoughts ?

First make sure your surround system has s/pdif in
I haven’t seen an HDTV without digital audio out, but if you have such a TV (more likely monitor) , then if you have an Set-top box, connect the s/pdif out of the set-top box to the surround receiver directly.
