my childrens dvds are black and white on dvd player and colour on laptop?
Our childrens new films will not play in colour yet all there others do whats going on? when I put them on laptop they were fine!!
Its all connected properly as all other dvds work fine.
It either means your DVD player is in NTSC format and your DVD discs are in PAL format OR your DVD player is in PAL format and your DVD discs are in NTSC format.
Usually I would assume the former (because most people on here are from North America), but you used the spelling ‘colour’, which could indicate you are outside of North America, in which case the latter (NTSC discs on PAL player) would be more likely.
The major incompatibility between the two formats is the way the colour information is encoded, so attempting to play one format on a device which is only designed to play the other format will result in a loss of colour. Note that there are other differences (e.g. in resolution and frame-rate), but these incompatibilities are less noticeable.
You are most likely to encounter this problem if you bought the DVDs online from a foreign source (e.g. living in UK, but bought online from U.S.).
Note that some Dvd Players are compatible with both NTSC and PAL formats (likely why your laptop can play them back just fine).
Note that the DVD format is NOT related to the DVD region. The DVD region encoding is an artificial mechanism to prevent unauthorized distribution of the discs to other countries (e.g. to prevent people from buying a new Dvd Movie online from the US and shipping it to the UK where it hasn’t been released yet). Some DVD distributors encode their discs with a region code so it can only be played back on DVDs from that specific region, but some distributors do not (purposely allow the disc to be played back on any player). Some DVD players simply ignore the region encoding and play all discs anyway.
In your case, the disc(s) do not appear to be region encoded, but they do appear to be in the wrong format (NTSC/PAL) in terms of what your player is expecting.
